I have reached the point I never thought I’d reach…I am going to stay up all night in order to get an item on Black Friday. Ben and I decided to forgo giving one another gifts and want a Wii. A local store in Michigan, Meijer, has announced on the front page of their flyer that each store will have at least 30 Wii’s available at 5 am. Since their headquarters is in Grand Rapids, we have at LEAST 10 Mejier stores to “stake” out. My willing sister-in-laws and I have decided to pull an all-nighter, fan out in two groups, and stand in line for our Wii systems. Here are my two justifications for taking on this insanity…

1. We can wait inside at a Meijer store because they are open 24 hours a day. I could not and WOULD not stand outside in the cold for more than half an hour for any item–I love snow, but I could not tolerate the cold for hours on end.

2. I still have two days to catch up on the sleep that I’ll lose tonight with no plans for the weekend–I could not hack this on a regular two-day weekend.

We’ve decided we need to get in line early (midnight-2am) to help guarantee our chances of obtaining one of these gaming systems. Three of us got up and were in line at Kmart this morning, but we were way too late to get a Wii ticket, so we determined that Wii’s are still a hot ticket item and we need to go big or go home. Plus, I am only committing this kind of craziness once–if I don’t get one today/tomorrow, we are not getting one on my watch.

Wish us luck–I’ll let you know about the adventure, I’m sure it will be memorable!

Well, as many of you know, opening day means Widower Weekend for Holly–Ben went off to the Man Cave to pose as the great white hunter while I manned the homestead. I had Friday off of school as a comp day for conferences last week, so I attempted to sleep in…until my SCHOOL called at 9am! They were “testing” the new alert system for the district–I was not pleased. I bummed around a bit, but then decided to get busy and do some cleaning. I changed the bed, tended to the bathrooms, walked pooch, vacuumed up all the stray leaves, and did house laundry. I also decided to go get my flu shot, complements of GVSU. I made a quick trip to Meijers for bread and milk so I could truly spend the weekend at the house, filled the tank up in the Equinox, and relaxed in front of the TV.

Saturday and Sunday, I didn’t leave the house except to walk the dog around the neighborhood. What a good feeling! I wore my comfy clothes and did nothing essential–I finished my first novel since the school year started, The Secret Life of Bees. What a great book–I hope Kidd decides to write a sequel. I can’t wait to see the movie to see how they compare. I decided then to dedicate some time to the tube, so I watched movie after movie–Sweet Home Alabama, The Lake House, Mail Order Bride, The Break-Up. Good stuff!

Today, I got some extra shut-eye and then tended to Bailey’s walk, the dusting, and of course, fantasy football lineup. I don’t know why I bother with the fantasy football–either my team makes no points or I make bad decisions and sit the all-stars on the bench. It has given me another reason to watch football, so that’s mostly why I’m addicted, but it’ll be more fun in 9 months when I get to start over. I also managed to listen to Casey Kasem on the 80’s channel–it was 1981, great episode– write my letter of recommendation for my student teacher, and bake a cake (cherry chip-yum!) while I watched the football games.

All in all, it was a relaxing Widower Weekend. The older I get, the more I enjoy hanging around the house and taking advantage of my days of solitute. I guess it could also mean I’m a loner or massively depressed, there ARE two sides of every coin.

P.S. GVSU begins their run for the D2 football championship vs. Ashland at GVSU next weekend. Go Lakers!
